Een mooie blauwe kaft, beetje metallic met een gouden boom in het midden trokken meteen al mijn aandacht(bestel hier).Bij het lezen van de titel dacht ik meteen, en is er ooit een gewoon huwelijk? Want wat is dat een ‘gewoon huwelijk’. Is niet elke huwelijk een verbinding tussen twee unieke mensen? Wat weer zorgt voor een uniek huwelijk, en dus een ongewoon huwelijk.
Dat dacht ik. Dat ging meteen door mij heen. Getriggerd las ik de achterkant en besloot om het boek te kopen. Binnen een paar dagen had ik het boek al uit. En wat een boek. Wat een verhaal. Het grijpt je meteen vast en
laat je niet los. Tot je het tot de laatste bladzijde hebt gelezen en je een beetje verdrietig en tevreden achterlaat.
Roy, een zwarte jongeman wat ik natuurlijk niet zomaar vermeld, heeft zijn leven op de rit. Gestudeerd, carrière in de lift, getrouwd, een huis en het volgende staat op de planning om af te vinken. Een baby. Zijn echtgenote, Celestial doet het net zo goed. Een studie achter de rug aan de kunstacademie en heeft een droom. Samen met Roy die haar droom verder uitwerkt gaat het hen voor de wind. Tot het noodlot toeslaat. Roy wordt onterecht beschuldigd van een criminele daad en de jury acht hem schuldig. Zomaar van de ene op de andere dag valt zijn hele leven waar hij heel hard voor heeft gewerkt als een kaartenhuis in elkaar. Hij moet 12 jaar zitten. Gevalletje op de wrong place wrong moment.

Het verhaal zoomt vervolgens in op het huwelijk van Roy en Celestial. Verteld vanuit beide personages. Gegoten in brief vorm maar ook in gedachte vorm. Zo kom je meer te weten over de huwelijken van de ouders van Roy en Celestial. Maar komt ook de beste vriend van Celestial in beeld die nog een belangrijke rol zal krijgen in dit verhaal.
Een ongewoon huwelijk gaat over het huwelijk. Hoe elk huwelijk haar eigen uitdagingen kent. Hoe tijd en afstand een rol kunnen spelen in het slagen of falen. Hoe omgeving dit beïnvloedt. Hoe liefde geen garantie is net zomin als passie.
Een ongewoon huwelijk gaat over vergeven. Over pijn en verdriet. Over breken en helen. Over verdergaan, loslaten en vasthouden. Maar een ongewoon huwelijk gaat ook over racisme. Onrecht. Recht wat alles behalve recht is. En niet opgeven. Het mooie van dit verhaal en waar de schrijfster glansrijk in is geslaagd is dat je al lezende begrip kan opbrengen voor iedereen. Je hart gaat uit naar Roy, naar Celestial, naar de beste vriend, naar de ouders van Roy en Celestial. Naar zelfs het slachtoffer die Roy onterecht beschuldigde. Dit verhaal kent geen goede mensen versus slechte mensen. Alleen maar mensen. Die soms goed doen en soms minder goed. Mensen met gevoelens en emoties. Mensen die simpelweg hun best proberen te doen om van hun leven iets te maken.
Er zijn zoveel lessen die je uit dit verhaal kan halen waar ik me als moslima in kon vinden. Want het leven is alles behalve gewoon en simpel en een huwelijk net zo min.
Een ongewoon huwelijk is daarom een huwelijk zoals wij die allemaal kennen.

Ik kon me eigenlijk in alledrie de karakters wel vinden,het lot heeft zo moeten zijn.
Een mooi boek voor degene die niet van zware kost houden. Het leest lekker weg en is de moeite waard!

Ja lastig he voor iedereen. Dat zijn van die keuzes die je moet maken waar geen van allen ok is en waar je zelfs zonder een keuze gemaakt te hebben nog steeds een keuze hebt gemaakt.

Al scrollend kwam ik jou post op insta tegen over dit boek. En werd even getriggerd door de titel. Eerst dacht ik: verrek, een aparte titel. En meteen daarna had ik een deja vu. Want precies dat dacht ik een maand geleden toen ik deze titel in de bibliotheek zag staan tussen andere boeken en ik m in mijn mandje legde. Dus vond het wel heel bijzonder en toevallig dat jij ook in dezelfde periode dit boek had gekozen om te lezen. Vandaar dat ik geheel tegen mijn aard in toch iets schrijf op jouw site.
Ik vond het ook een mooi boek en vlot om te lezen. En deed me ook weer beseffen dat het leven in een splitsecond anders kan verlopen dan zoals je wil en/of van plan bent te lijden/leiden. Ik moet zeggen dat ik toch wel wrok voelde jegens Celestial en haar vader mijn gevoelens wat betreft haar keuze vertegenwoordigde. Maar zoals je zei op het eind heb je vrede met hoe het levenspad van eenieder loopt.
